My husband and I encourage our children to memorize Bible verses, we pick one verse at a time and focus on it until they have it memorized. They don’t always show immediate interest in learning the verse, but we still say it, because they are listening. I’ve had times where I thought my children weren’t catching on and it felt like it was for nothing. Then in the most unexpected moment, I overheard one of them saying the entire verse word-for-word!

It’s such a beautiful reminder that children are catching on even when we think they aren’t. They hear us when we say the verses and even if they don’t repeat it back, they are still learning. As Christian parents, we can faithfully instill the Word of God in our children one small verse at a time and we need to trust that it is being planted in their hearts.

It may take a whole month to memorize one Bible verse, but in a whole year that’s twelve verses! So focus on one at a time and trust that God’s Word is reaching them within. Over time they may be interested in sharing all the verses they’ve memorized, this is a good opportunity to remind them why it’s important to learn what the Bible says.

Give your children positive affirmations when they’ve done well and memorized some verses, children need encouragement to remember that what they are doing is good!
