As Christian Parents, How Can We Help Our Children Memorize Bible Verses?

My husband and I encouraged scripture memorization with our children at supper daily. So we pick a verse to focus on each day around the table together. At first, my husband and I would say it and the kids would just listen, but after a while, they would repeat it back; even our two-and-a-half-year-old! One day as my five-year-old son was playing by himself occupied by his toys, I heard him say the whole verse perfectly word for word! My mama’s heart was full! It is a wonderful reminder that children are listening, and God’s Word is planted in their hearts, even if it doesn’t show right away!

Amongst the busyness of raising children, finding time to focus on scripture memorization can easily get lost in the mix of it all. Memorizing Scripture should be a priority in a Christian’s life because it helps us overcome sin and live in obedience to the Lord. It helps us grow spiritually, and we can memorize Scripture so it comes to mind at times we don’t have a Bible handy. How can we make Bible verse memorization a priority in our children’s lives? Which ways can we make it a fruitful habit that they continue into adulthood? How can we plant God’s Word in our children’s lives so it comes to mind at times when they need to make tough choices?

If you want to help teach your children to memorize Bible verses, and you want some easy ways to add it to your everyday life, then below are ways to add scripture memorization in a typical day into our children’s lives.

Another scripture memorization idea for your family could be to pick a verse of the month.
