If I could go back to when I was a new mom, there’s advice I’d give myself that would take a lot of pressure off and ease many of my worries. As a new mom, I was overwhelmed and would overthink many things. First-time moms have so much to learn while adjusting to their new role and are quickly thrown into an immense amount of responsibility.
Caring for this new little life you adore so much, yet you’re exhausted, and keeping up with the feedings, diaper changes, and all the other normal life responsibilities is a lot.
Seven years ago I welcomed my first beautiful baby girl into this world and looking back now, I would have loved to have encouragement from experienced moms to get through that challenging time. Suddenly this sweet little life depended on me for everything and I struggled to adjust to my new reality as a mom.
Being extremely sleep-deprived, overwhelmed, and recovering from all the changes my body went through for nine months, I cried a lot. At the same time, I instantly loved being a mom, I adored my baby girl and was excited to venture into motherhood it was just more challenging than I had imagined.

1) As A New Mom Try Not To Worry So Much

While many things can go wrong, dwelling on worry doesn’t add any benefit to your life. Having a new baby is supposed to be a joyous time, and worry can take away some of that newborn bliss.
Instead, when the worry slips in, pray against it and choose to trust the Lord with your new baby’s life. Allow yourself to live in peace and trust that God gave you the ability to care for this precious little life and that you are more than capable of providing the best care for your baby.

When I was a first-time mom, I remember feeling lost in motherhood. I barely had any time to put any effort into myself and I felt I lost a bit of my identity in this new role in my life. I loved being a mom, it’s what I wanted more than anything, but I struggled to balance still feeling like myself amongst it all.
Looking back I wish I knew that those feelings would pass, and you will feel like a normal functioning human being again, you will find your identity outside of motherhood. There may be seasons of having to give up some of your “extras” that you enjoy, but as your children grow, you’ll discover your individualism again.

6) You Will Sleep Well Again One Day
Being A new mom comes with many sleepless nights. It can become overwhelming and hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. But know that you will sleep again one day, it may feel in the moment like this is your new reality, but eventually when given the opportunity and the right atmosphere children do learn to sleep well. In those moments of complete exhaustion cling to the Lord and find your strength in Him, He will carry you through the hard times.
7) Enjoy Any Free Time, Accept Help When It’s Offered
Because you don’t have to do it all on your own! If someone you trust is offering help and you have an opportunity for some time to yourself, don’t feel bad accepting the offer. Enjoy the free time, and use it however you need to to feel refreshed and rested. It’s okay to not be in your baby’s presence 24/7, permit yourself to have that quiet time if you need it.
8) Don’t Let Mom Guilt Consume You
There are so many situations that can arise that make new mothers feel mom guilt. Try to not give in to this, it can become all-consuming when we let all the little worries creep in. You love your baby and you are doing the absolute best you can, trust your ability to make decisions and offer the best care for your sweet little one. Even if you do things differently than other moms, you’re on your journey, and looking different is okay!
9) Feel Free To Take Advice From Other Moms With A Grain Of Salt
You are your baby’s mother, and you know what’s best for them. Other moms may have plenty of advice to offer, but you are under no obligation to take any of it. Take the advice you want and chuck aside what you don’t. There is nothing wrong with making your own decisions on behalf of your baby and trusting your God-given instincts to do a successful job. Advice will come, in one way or another, but permit yourself to take it or leave it as you please.
10) It’s Okay To Learn As You Go, Motherhood Is A Learning Journey
It’s okay to learn as you go, you are a first-time mom after all, and it takes time to catch onto things. Most likely, things you choose to do with your first baby, if you have a second, you may do differently. Because as you go you develop and grow and you learn what works and what doesn’t. You will gain confidence as you go, and the more experience you have as a mom, the more you will feel secure in your ways. It’s a process it doesn’t happen overnight so give yourself grace.
11) Don’t Get Stuck In The Comparison Trap
Comparison is a thief of time and joy. While you will constantly see other moms and how they do things, try not to get stuck in the comparison trap. Every mom is on a unique journey and we all will inevitably do things differently than others. It’s okay to do you and trust your abilities as a mom.
We don’t all have to look the same or have the same motherhood goals. Your journey is unique and beautiful and God has equipped you to be the best mama to your little one. So enjoy the moment and the sweet life entrusted to you and focus on what matters.
12) Count Your Blessings, Celebrate The Small Victories, And Capture The Moments That Matter To You
Amongst the crazy times as a new mom, it’s easy to overlook how blessed you are. Even when it’s challenging, you are so blessed. Because you’ve been given the most precious gift, try to remember that. Celebrate all the small victories along the way, if your baby sleeps through the night, or if you figured out what is causing the fussy stomach, celebrate those little victories.
Because those moments can be challenging and finding a solution is worthy of acknowledgment. Finally, capture the moments that matter to you! Don’t feel pressure to take photos non-stop or get professional ones, figure out what special moments you want to remember and focus on those.
