How Can Kids Overcome Fear Biblically?

1) Teach Kids To Put Their Trust In God

Psalm 56:3 NIV says “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”

As Christian parents, we should instill in our kids biblical truths that help them see God as a trustworthy Father. Faith makes fear leave, and God’s word tells us that faith comes by hearing the message (Romans 10:17 NIV).

So instilling God’s word in our children’s hearts is a way to help them grow in faith and place their trust in God. Ultimately they can overcome fear by learning to place their trust in God and turning to His word for comfort in those dark times.

2) Remind Kids That Fear Is Not From God, He Offers Peace Unlike The World Offers

John 14:27 NIV says “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give it to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

A way to make fear dissolve is to remind kids that fear is not from God, He offers a peace so deep and pure that you can’t find it in this world. His peace goes beyond all understanding (Philippians 4:7 NIV) and He wants His children to live their lives with peace and to not let fear consume them.

Turning to Scriptures that share about God’s peace is a good way to remind kids that God wants them to have peace in their hearts and that His peace is a true blessing.

3) Teach Kids That Fear Does Not Come From God

2 Timothy 1:7 NIV says “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline.”

God gave us all we need to live victorious lives in Christ, and as Christian parents, we can help instill that abundant hope in our kids. Teaching them that fear does not come from God can help them realize that God made them with the ability to overcome their fears and live their lives by faith.

He desires for them to live by faith and not dwell on fear, and when His truth is shining bright, there is no room for darkness or fear.

4) Remind Kids That God Is Always With Them, He Never Leaves Their Side

Psalm 23:4 NIV says “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and staff, they comfort me.”

No matter how dark the valleys of life can be, God is right beside us every step of the way. Teaching kids this powerful truth can be something they cling to when fear starts to creep in.

Although evil is all around, with God by our side we never have to live in fear. And this truth can bring comfort to kids because God is faithful and He is with them always. They can take Him at His word, and live with assurance that He is always there.

5) Teach Kids That God Never Slumbers Or Grows Weary, He Is Always There To Rescue Them

Psalm 46:1 NIV says “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

God is our refuge, He is the safe place we can run to when life gets fearful. Teaching kids that God never slumbers or grows weary (Isaiah 40:28 NIV) and that He is an ever-present help in times of trouble can help them turn to Him when they are afraid.

Teaching kids that God is a loving Father who is ALWAYS available, and they don’t have to wait for Him to be “free” they can turn to Him anytime and anywhere. This can help them feel safe knowing they have a rescuer who loves them and offers them safety from the challenges in life. And though He allows the storms sometimes, He promised never to leave our side.

Psalm 34:7 NIV says “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and He delivers them.”

The Bible tells us that God’s angels encamp around those who fear Him, and He delivers them. This is a comforting and powerful truth, that God loves us so much He sends His angels to watch out for us.

Kids can face their fears knowing that God is watching over them and He sends His angels to encamp around them and keep them safe. They are never alone and when they understand this powerful truth it can help them overcome the fears they face.

8) Teach Kids That Nothing Can Separate Them From God’s Love

Romans 8:38-39 NIV says “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present, not the future nor any powers, neither height nor depth, not anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Nothing can separate us from God’s love, nothing can take it away from us. What a powerful truth to teach kids, that God loves them so much and no one can ever take away that deep love from them.

Though things in this world can be taken away, God’s love is forever and this can help kids feel secure in their relationship with the Lord and help them feel safe knowing that God’s love is forever. Which brings peace and security in who they are in Christ, a great way to help them overcome fear.

9) Remind Kids That God Wants To Carry Their Worries, Anxieties, And Fears For Them And Make Their Load Light

1 Peter 5:7 NIV says “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”

When anxiety creeps in, God offers a way for us to overcome the heaviness of this world. He wants to carry our burdens for us and make our loads light and easy (Matthew 11:29-30 NIV).

Reminding kids that when they feel overtaken by fears, worries, and anxiety they can cast those all on the Lord and they can know that He is more than capable of carrying those heavy burdens on their behalf.

He wants their load to be light and easy, and placing their trust in Him and giving Him the heavy burdens is a way to let go and accept God’s help in those hard times.

10) Teach Kids That God Is Faithful, He Keeps His Word And Fulfills His Promises

Psalm 91:4-5 NIV says “He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day.”

God is faithful, though others in this life will let us down and betray us, He never will.

Teaching kids this powerful truth about God can help them see Him as a constant and loving Father. They can know that God is faithful and He will do what His word says.

And His word tells us that He will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5 NIV).

11) Teach Kids That God Wants Them To Turn To Him In Prayer When They Are Afraid

Philippians 4:6 NIV says “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

God is always there and He wants us to call on Him, teaching kids that they can pray anytime, anywhere, and for any reason is a great way to help them in those moments when fear takes over.

God hears our prayers (Proverbs 15:29 NIV) and He moves on our behalf even when we can’t see what He’s doing. By faith, prayer is powerful and makes a difference and there is no place for fear when we live by faith.

Prayer is a beautiful blessing, the ability to talk to God and present anything before Him, so when kids feel fearful, reminding them of the power and blessing of prayer is a great way to help them through.

Blessing kids with their very own Bible is a great way to encourage them to turn to it when they feel fearful. A special Bible that can stay by their bedside and they can reach for anytime.

You can have a special worship song that you remind your kids of when they are fearful, and help them focus on singing praises to God and not thinking about fearful things.
